High Performance PostgreSQL for Rails โ€” Issue #02

Issue #02 โ€” Update June 13, 2023

Technical Reviewer Feedback Is In! ๐Ÿ“ฐ

Hi everyone. Thanks for taking a couple of minutes to check this out. Hope your summer is going well so far! If you missed the first issue of this newsletter, click here for Issue #001.

Postgres-wise, I had a very busy Spring. In the photo above I'm presenting at PGDay Chicago 2023 back in April which was great. I wrote up my conference experience and it's linked below.

On with the book updates!

๐Ÿ“š Book Updates

  • Technical Reviews are in! Technical Reviewer feedback was anonymized and consolidated by the editor Don, and covered the first half of the book, around 6 chapters. Lot's of praise! For editing purposes, we're focused mainly on incorporating constructive feedback. When printed out, this was more than 30 pages of feedback to go through. I've enjoyed going through every line! I tweeted my first thank you of many, and really appreciate the effort the reviewers put in.
  • I've significantly restructured the Preface, Introduction, and first chapter, and have added new appendices for things like Installation Guides. Hopefully readers get everything installed smoothly and feel well prepared to work on the application and database.
  • I met with my friend Nate about designing a book cover. Hope to share more on that soon!

Things are trucking along.๐Ÿšš We're aiming for late July for a Beta release. There is loads of work to do between now and then.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Recent Activities

  • I'm very happy to report there are now more than 550 subscribers receiving these updates! Please continue sharing https://pgrailsbook.com/ on social media and with your work colleagues.
  • I submitted Call for Paper proposals to Rails World and PG Conf NYC coming up this fall. I'd love to present or attend both but unfortunately they overlap in time, so I'm not sure whether I'll end up presenting or attending either.
  • I've got an upcoming podcast appearance in the works. More on that soon.

Here are some recent blog posts I've written.

PGDay Chicago 2023 Conference

Better Markdown Writing With Vale

I'm really excited about this stage of the book although it's very demanding. Encouragement in emails, tweets, and DMs has really helped me keep going!

That's all I've got for this issue.

Have a great week!
